7 tips to have a great time in San José

San Jose, capital of Costa Rica. A small city but full of energy and places to discover.

If you want to have a great time in San José, you should take into account several tips so that the visit here will be the best memory, because although Costa Rica is Pura Vida and its people are too, factors such as weather and traffic are important to consider, for this reason, we bring you 7 tips to have a good time.

Tip 1. The weather does not define me

Welcome to the tropics, where the sun and the rain are inevitable, they only increase or decrease depending on the location you are in and the time of year you visit us. In most of Costa Rica, summer begins at the end of November and lasts until the beginning of March. However, in the northern part of the country (South Caribbean, San Carlos, Tortuguero) the sunniest season is from the end of August to early November. Our advice, the weather does not define the quality of the trip you can have, just always have a waterproof coat on hand.

Tip 2. Location for everyone

Costa Rica is small, but locating it is not so easy, unlike most countries the streets and avenues do not have the signs indicated above their names.

When you land at the Juan Santamaría airport, your location is in Alajuela, a province near San José. Although its territory allows distances to be relatively short, it is important to have connectivity (internet) for greater comfort and safety when traveling. On the other hand, avoid using red or airport taxis as their price is much higher. If the use of public transport is required, the Uber application or the bus service is the most acceptable, in case of renting a vehicle, please drive with great caution.

Tip 3. Near San José

Staying in San José is undoubtedly an excellent option if you want to visit a lot and get to know the daily life of the Ticos.

Our advice is to find lodging in areas such as Los Yoses, Sabana, or Barrio Escalante that allow you to go for a walk and at the same time have great accessibility to public transport to visit more specific tourist areas (volcanoes, hot springs, or beaches). The main tours also depart from San José, and if we are talking about nightlife, you can find a variety of bars or parties, from electronic music to Latin music.

Tip 4. Costa Rican gastronomy

Part of knowing a country and its culture is its gastronomy. If you visit the heart of San José you can find a wide variety of options such as the Central Market where you can enjoy a delicious pot of meat (typical Costa Rican soup called “Sopa”) a fresh ceviche, the inevitable breakfast with gallo pinto or a refreshing “sorbetera” ice cream, these are undoubtedly classics of our cuisine. On the other hand, you can find excellent restaurant options such as ISOLINA (fusion food), Na Praia (seafood), or Silvestre restaurant that manages to combine local cuisine and turn it into exotic options.

In recent years, the popularity of gastronomic markets has increased, which offer a lot of versatility and if we talk about options, very close to San José you can find El mestizo, La Gata, Amor de Barrio, among others.

Tip 5. Infallible

Barrio La California is located in the heart of San José, and without a doubt it is the place with the highest traffic of people looking for a party, there you can find nightclubs such as El mercadito, Mood and Selvatica, places of various productions of Electric Animals, on the other hand, places like Antik have two environments (electronic and reggaeton), bars like Area City with much more alternative music or concepts like Chupitos (shots) that are more focused on the experience when consuming alcoholic beverages.

On the other hand, to the west of the capital in Sabana, Santa Ana and Escazú you will find offers of bars and nightclubs, mainly in the Lindora area.

In short, to be able to enjoy any place in Costa Rica more peacefully, we recommend some items that will help make your trip more enjoyable. Indispensable, mosquito repellent, and sunscreen, welcome to the tropics (again) too, we recommend a light coat, hopefully waterproof.

Tip 6. Nightlife

Mixology, DJs, concerts, and Costa Rican-style parties are part of the nightlife in San José, which has two main areas where you can find the right type of party for your tastes.

Barrio La California is located in the heart of San José, and without a doubt, it is the place with the highest traffic of people looking for a party, there you can find nightclubs with Antik that has two environments (electronic and reggaeton), even bars like Area City with much more alternative music. Also, concepts such as Chupitos (shots) and Selvática (Mixology) are more oriented towards the experience when consuming alcoholic beverages.

On the other hand, to the west of the capital in Sabana, Santa Ana, and Escazú, you will also find nightlife, from electronic music parties like Electric Animals to the recurrent transit bars in the Lindora area.

Tip 7. Pura Vida, Costa Rica

The Costa Rican culture is undoubtedly peculiarly relaxed, this is reflected in their treatment, their work, and their lifestyle. Our advice to anyone who visits this beautiful country is to get carried away by the Pura Vida vibe, we guarantee that it will take you to wonderful corners, places, and people, and of course, it will make your trip an unforgettable experience.
